Rs. 61.12 crore for hostels for backward communities

Chennai: In a move aimed at benefitting students of backward and most backward communities, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday gave administrative sanction for construction of hostels at a cost of Rs. 61.12 crore to accommodate them.

According to an official release, in the first phase, 69 backward and most backward hostels with strength of 50 students and 15 with a strength of 100 students functioning in private premises would be covered under the scheme.

Jayalalithaa also granted Rs. 3.35 crore for setting up solar powered equipment in such buildings, it said.

Jayalalithaa also gave consent for upgradation of nine government-run middle schools to high school level located in Theni, Madurai and Dindigul districts, benefitting students of 'khallar' , most backward denotified community.

Through this initiative, 57 new jobs would be created in schools, costing Rs. 1.39 crore to the exchequer every year, the release added.
